Advance involves loss :: essays research papers

It has been said that â€Å"Any Advance involves some loss†. This is in fact true because life is a learning process, where if nothing is lost nothing is learned. Mistakes are made and people learn from them. In life things are lost but something will always come from it. There have been many events in history and in literature that prove this saying right. In order for they’re to be an advance, or for something to be gained there are costs of sacrifices to be made but in the end the result is usually beneficial.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In between 1861 and 1865 there was a Civil War in the United Sates of America between the North and South in which the South wanted to secede from the Union. The civil war ended with a human cost of over half a million lives and untold amounts of property. It was a brutal conflict. Reuniting the nation proved to be a long and difficult task. The North’s victory meant that Lincolns goal of keeping the nation whole was achieved. He looked to restore peace and harmony. â€Å"The Emancipation Proclamation† of 1803 had announced the North would abolish slavery in the rebelling states. Lincoln planned to have the rebel states pass laws abolishing slavery, but since the states took no action congress moved. In December 1865, the states ratified the thirteenth amendment abolishing slavery.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In the play â€Å"A Raisin in the Sun†, Lorraine Hansberry, the younger family was not a very wealthy one. Their financial troubles caused for tension and discontent. An event in this play changed the lives of the Younger’s forever, when a check of $10, 000 arrived. This money comes form the hard work of Mr. Younger, husband of Mama, in this play who worked long hard hours to provide his family with this check after his death. It took the Death of Mr. Younger, and his strenuous work he did all of his life to receive this check. With this check the family could now move into a comfortable living space, and help them live life easier.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Overall, in order to gain something one must lose something. Crucible Analyzing John Proctor Essay

Analyzing John Proctor as a Tragic Hero In the Crucible, a play by Arthur Miller, John Proctor is the tragic hero. A tragic hero is defined as someone who has great courage that ends up dying at the end of the story. The reason John Proctor is the tragic hero of this play is because he has so much to lose. John Proctor fulfills my requirements of a tragic hero throughout the play. He decides to go to court and expose the girls. The girls turn on him and he gets accused. He is only trying to do well, but gets falsely accused. John Proctor is also a very intelligent man who can detect others as being fraudulent, however he questions his own moral. He questions himself because of his affair with Abigail which was his only flaw throughout the play. In spite of this I still consider him an honorable man. Another thing he did was save his wife from being put to death, and also refusing to confess practicing witchcraft. He proves he is a tragic hero when he explains to the judge that since he gave his soul to leave his name. With this plea, Proctor has eliminated all hopes of living and has established himself as the tragic hero. John Proctor is a man of sufficient stature in that he is given the choice to save himself at the end of the play, but does not. He does keep his affair secretive, but that is only thing that made him seem like the villain. He did not deserve to die at the end of the play, but that is one of the requirements to make him considered a tragic hero. Proctor serves as the voice of justice in the play. He came out and told everyone about Abigail falsely accusing others of being witches. He also came out and ripped the warrant and told the men to leave. In the end, he comes close to confessing being a witch but realizes it disgraces his good name, which is all his children will know him by. The issues leading to John Proctor’s death are not universal. I believe that he should not have been the one getting the punishment in the end, but that is why he is the tragic hero. Throughout the play he was a man of integrity and nobleness. He confessed to practicing witchcraft, in which he really  didn’t. This is why he died; saving his wife from death.

The Problem With English Language Learners - 801 Words

One of the reasons that some students struggle in studying and learning in core areas is lack of content-related vocabulary. We acknowledge that the most challenging situation is with English language learners (ELLs). This is the reason Texas has adopted the English Language Proficiency Standards (ELPS) to be able to support the ELLs as they learn the required Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). However, on a large scale, we observe that even some of our students who are native English speakers also sometimes struggle academically. This is because some of our core areas such as math and science are also foreign to them. We normally do not use words such as bivariate, coefficient, tectonics, metalloids, etc. in our daily conversation. This is what makes learning our core areas challenging if we do not address vocabulary as we teach content. I enjoyed reading this week the article about misconceptions in teaching vocabulary. This is a good article for teachers to read for them to be aware of these misconceptions, which may be theirs as well and are continuously blocking them to be successful in teaching vocabulary. Padak, Bromley, Rasinski, Newton, (2012) enumerated five misconceptions about teaching vocabulary, to wit: 1. Definitions do the trick. Knowing the meaning of a word is not enough. Teachers should also teach the word’s multiple dimensions: structure and pronunciation, grammar, semantics, and spelling. 2. Weekly vocabulary lists are effective.
